Pfizer received the largest number of mentions for best
satisfying the needs of long-term care (LTC) pharmacy
providers/consultants with Medicare Part D in Verispan's fall 2005
Nursing Home Pharmacy Provider/Consultant Promotional Audit.
"At this early stage, (Pfizer) is really a leader," reported one LTC pharmacist, while another said, "Pfizer got involved early with Medicare Part D and continues to educate despite all the changes." The company offered a broad range of informational value-added programs for Medicare Part D, including physician and patient education, in-services and speaker programs. These programs were rated as valuable by LTC pharmacy providers/consultants.
Johnson & Johnson had the second-most "best" company mentions in the Medicare Part D category during the fall. One panelist noted that Janssen Eldercare "has been one of the leaders in support of education for providers," while another commented that the company was "above average on all counts." J&J offered several programs on the implications and cost decisions related to Medicare Part D, as well as financial support for education for consumers and physicians on related upcoming changes. -0- Top Companies for Medicare Part D COMPANY Pfizer Johnson & Johnson Forest Novartis Amgen Source: Verispan's Fall 2005 Nursing Home Pharmacy Provider/Consultant Promotional Audit
Forest also had a strong voice in LTC regarding Medicare Part D. Panelists said, "Company worked closely with us on contract progress; excellent resource for education in Medicare Part D and understands change," and "Medicare Part D is always a point of discussion with a Forest representative; they know the issues and support the process to improve on the benefit of Medicare Part D." Forest's value-added service offerings centered on Medicare Part D implementation, education and reimbursement. The company was also concerned with the exclusion of benzodiazepines from prescription drug plans.
According to LTC pharmacy providers/consultants reporting for both Verispan's 2005 Strategic Advantage and fall 2005 Nursing Home Pharmacy Provider/Consultant Promotional Audit, Forest and Pfizer have called on LTC organizations most often for Medicare purposes in the past three to six months, with the Johnson & Johnson LTC Group, Abbott and Bristol-Myers Squibb rounding out the top five. These pharmaceutical manufacturers utilized Medicare educational materials, tool kits, trainings, webcasts and program sponsorships during their LTC visits.
According to the fall 2005 Nursing Home Pharmacy Provider/Consultant Promotional Audit, a little more than half of LTC pharmacy providers/consultants cited education as a way pharmaceutical companies can partner with them to assist with the implementation of Medicare Part D. Suggested recipients of this education included pharmacies, nursing facilities, physicians, nurses, facility administrators, LTC residents, patients and their families.
About the Audit
Verispan's Nursing Home Pharmacy Provider/Consultant Promotional Audit is based on the responses of LTC pharmacy providers/consultants who service a large portion of U.S. nursing home and assisted-living beds. These influential pharmacy providers/consultants reported promotional activity by pharmaceutical firms over an eight-week period in fall 2005. They also rated pharmaceutical companies on their ability to meet the LTC industry's needs in four areas: contracts, value-added services, account personnel and corporate approach.
